WordPress 3.3 new release public

WordPress 3.3 Hands-on! A peek inside this awesome release.

Wordpress 3.3 released just this morning bringing new modules and ease of use features in the most popular CMS platform. This WordPress 3.3 release is codenamed “SONNY” and brings extensive featureset with it and you will also experience the addition of a totally new concept, the Pointers.

So lets begin the walk-through. I will not bore you going in through all the details, i will only introduce you to the new things the WP team has added in this release.

1. New Dashboard

I will not say its a completely new dashboard, although the developers have tweaked it a little bit to lessen up your workload to navigate between pages and other WordPress areas.

Immediately after you update your WordPress to 3.3, the first-most thing you will notice is the admin bar. The new Admin bar integrates the previously seen WordPress logo and Log out buttons to avoid wastage of unnecessary space.

Moving on, the next new feature is the Flyout Menu. When you hover over the Sidebar, you will notice a flyout menu popping out which gives you access to the sub menus inside that category. You will notice flyout appearing even in the admin bar. This is a very essential feature which makes WordPress navigation incredibly easier than before, further saving us time blogging.

2. Introduction of Pointers

Wordpress 3.3 pointers

It exactly is not a rocket science term or associated with the C programming in any way. Pointers, in the Noob’s language is just a tool which gives you a tour guide of a newly added feature. Basically it is a feature added for Plugin developers, to help demonstrate the Plugin users as to what functions the plugin can perform and how to access them easily.

3. Drag and Drop Multi media uploading

Wordpress 3.3 Upload New Media

The name says it all. You can now simply drag and drop files to upload them instead of going through the strenuous task of clicking the upload button, selecting a file and then clicking the Upload button again. The upload module also detects the file type of the media automatically.

4. Support for iPad and Tablet devices

Wordpress 3.3 on ipad

WordPress now looks good even on tablet devices. The team has now optimized the layout and design of WordPress for iPad and other mobile gadgets too. Now don’t fret if you are planning a destination to Dubai and forgot to pack up your laptop. The feature design of WordPress for tablets is just as responsive as the desktop version.

5. Integrated jQuery

jquery plus WordPress 3.3

WordPress now has support for jQuery and the update comes with jQuery 1.7.1 included with it. jQuery which is the most powerful Javascript library known on the webpages now comes pre-installed with WordPress 3.3. If inserting jQuery codes into the templates has always bugged you, no worries that problem is now solved.

6. Postname permalink is no further penalized

Many of you might be familiar with this feature. Permalink is nothing but the definition of the url you see in the address bar. WordPress gives you the functionality to style permalinks according to date, category and other parameters.

Wordpress 3.3 Permalink Settings

Previously assigning permalinks according to postnames came with a series of performance issues but now WordPress 3.3 has removed those issues giving you a healthy postname permalink structure.

That’s all there is to WordPress 3.3. Apart from these there are a lot other additional features introduced in this version, if you want to have a look at them, please refer to this page.
