How to Install and Run Microsoft Office 2007 in Ubuntu/Linux

[ad#ad-2]
Linux is a free open source operating system which is used by thousand across the world. The one thing i didn’t like about linux was you weren’t able to install and run Microsoft Office (e.g word, excel, powerpoint, onenote ect..). After heavy research and try and error for many hours i have finally managed to install and run Microsoft Office on my laptop which uses Ubuntu Linux 10.04 (LTS).

Today i am going to share with you all how i managed to install and run the software! But before hand i must warn you that some of the code in this tutorial which you have to use to run Microsoft office may corrupt your computer if inputted incorrectly! We do not take any responsibility if your computer/laptop/notebook ect.. gets harmed!

Step 1:
Go to  your application tab and select Ubuntu Software Centre. Then search and install “Wine Microsoft Windows Compatibility layer”. Once installed close the Ubuntu Software Centre by clicking the X

Step 2:
Now you have to install a plugin called “Wine Tricks”. To install this go to “Applications > Accessories  > Terminal”. When the terminal appears type in the below command , then press enter on your keyboard

wget www.kegal.com/wine/winetricks

This process of installing may take a couple of minutes. So be patient!

Step 3:
You know have to active the plugin. So type in the command below wait a couple of minutes and then resume to step 4

sh winetricks msxml13 dotnet20 gdiplus riched20 riched30 vcrun2005sp1

A whole lot of text will appear which means the plugin is now running as it should.

Step 4:
We know how to edit a sentence of linux’s coding. Please MAKE SURE you do the following below correctly or you may corrupt your system. PROCEED WITH CAUTION!

To edit the code now go back into terminal and this time type the command

gksu gedit /usr/share/applications/wine.desktop

Now a text document should appear. Now look for the code “xec=cautious-launcher %f wine start /unix” and delete it and replace it with “ Exec=wine start /unix %f ” don’t include the “.

Step 5:
Now restart your computer. You can proceed without restarting, this just makes sure that changes do take affect.

Step 6:
Now you need to edit a settings. Now go to  Applications > Wine > Configure Wine

Under Windows Settings click on the arrow on the drop down menu and select “Windows XP”. Only the Windows XP settings will work! Now click apply and close the window

Step 7:
Now insert your Microsoft office 2007 disc, open the disc and RIGHT click “Setup.exe” and than select “Open with Wine”

Then install office 2007 like you would with windows. But when you get prompted to install windows updates say “No, Never”. This may cause ubuntu to go funny if you say yes.

—–

Thats all you have to do now Office should work. Please keep in mind this may contain a number of bugs as Wine is still in developing stages!

[HOW TO] Setup BuddyPress on WordPress 3.0.1!

[ad#ankit1]
It’s been a long time from I have been away from Internet, even didn’t do anything on my own blogs. I am kinda person who always likes to keep playing with something or the other. If you’re one of Extreme Trix reader, you would know my nature.. Every month I do some changes and every third-fourth month I release a new version. But these days I even didn’t get time to write any article playing with them was a far away thing.  As my 1st unit go over this Saturday I was kinda free so thought why don’t I do something?

From a quite time I was planning to give a try to BuddyPress on my blogs as it is the only open source application I am good with after WordPress. I have been testing BuddyPress on local server from a year and last day finally it was time to make it live. Here’s a tutorial for others who would like to try it on their blog or blogs too.

Tips

  • Make sure your WordPress blog is upgraded properly (doesn’t matter on which version you are).
  • You have a complete back up of your blog (if anything goes wrong, you can revert back).
  • Your Permalink structure is not too complex.

Getting Started

  • Head over to ‘plugin’ page from your WordPress Dashboard, click on ‘Add new’ and search for “BuddyPress” without quotes and like you install other plug-ins, similarly click on the install button and BuddyPress would be installed in seconds.

    installing BuddyPress

    installing BuddyPress

  • Once installed activate the plugin by clicking on ‘Activate’ button. You would see a black colored admin bar at the top of your Dashboard once installed successfully, though the bar may show up in your blog’s theme as your theme may not compatible with it.
  • If your blog’s theme is fully compatible, then it’s good enough or else you would be left with two options  either to install a BuddyPress compatible theme or make your theme compatible with it (don’t worry making a theme compatible is easy).

    Notice

    Notice

  • As I said in above lines either install a BuddyPress compatible theme or make your own theme compatible with it. I am sure most of you wouldn’t like to change your theme as it would require a lot of time to change a BuddyPress to look like required to your needs. Don’t worry making a theme compatible is even simpler than installing a plugin.
  • To make your current theme BuddyPress compatible, you would require a plugin – BuddyPress Template Pack. Install and activate it. After activating, head over to BP Compatibility page under the Appearance section.

    BP Compability

    BP Compability

  • Your first step would be to move two theme files, do it! And continue following other 4 steps until you feel that your theme is working all fine. It won’t matter much if you do or don’t the last 3 steps as they are common tips to fix alignment and move some more pages to better flexibility.
  • Congrats! You now have a social network cum blog now! :D

If you want to experience BuddyPress’s features without trying on your blog, head over this page and if you want to try it on your local host read the tutorial here.

5 More Notepad Tricks

[ad#ad-2]

Notepad Tricks

I had written an article on Notepad Tricks and many people requested me to write more of these tricks. So here are 5 more tricks for Notepad, and this time its only .bat files which means all tricks are done using command prompt.

I’ll start the numbering from 11 so that you may know exactly how many tricks I’ve put up on the overall…

11. Make Colorful Command Prompt

Type the following in notepad:

@ echo off
echo:
echo ……………………………
echo Press 1 for green, 2 for red or 3 for blue, or 4 for exit
echo ……………………………
set /p m=Type 1, 2, or 3, or 4, and press enter:
echo:
if %m%==1 goto 1
if %m%==2 goto 2
if %m%==3 goto 3
if %m%==4 goto 4
:1
color 0a
echo This is the green
goto 4
:2
color 04
echo This is the red
goto 4
:3
color 06
echo This is the blue
goto 4
:4
Pause
goto end
:end

Save it as color.bat
Open the .bat file and select your number 1,2 or 3 for the colors.. or 4 for exit.. It will print a specific text in a desired color…

You can change the bold text to your choice.

Here are the color combination’s in Command Prompt:
0 = Black
1 = Blue
2 = Green
3 = Aqua
4 = Red
5 = Purple
6 = Yellow
7 = White
8 = Gray
9 = Light Blue
A = Light Green
B = Light Aqua
C = Light Red
D = Light Purple
E = Light Yellow
F = Bright White

Type the background color followed by the text color. For example, if you want a black background and green text then type the color as 02 …..

12. Notepad Diagrams

Lets see this example:

@ echo off
echo:
echo ……………………………
echo Press 1 for windows, 2 for apple or 3 for exit
echo ……………………………
set /p m=Type 1, 2, or 3, and press enter:
echo:
if %m%==1 goto 1
if %m%==2 goto 2
if %m%==3 goto 3
:1
echo _______________*******________________________
echo _____________***********______________________
echo ___________**************_____________________
echo __________****************____________________
echo __________****************___**__________**___
echo _________****************___****************__
echo ________*****************___***************___
echo _______*****************___****************___
echo _______***___________**___****************____
echo __________________________***************_____
echo ________***********________*************______
echo _____****************_______**********________
echo _____****************___**_____________*______
echo ____****************___****************_______
echo ____****************___***************________
echo ___*****************__****************________
echo ___**___________**___****************_________
echo _____________________****************_________
echo ______________________**************__________
echo ________________________*********_____________
echo _________________________*******______________
echo:
echo:
goto 3
:2
echo ______________________________________________
echo ______________________________________________
echo _____________________________**_______________
echo ___________________________***________________
echo _________________________****_________________
echo _________________________***__________________
echo ______________________________________________
echo ________________****________*****_____________
echo ____________************************__________
echo __________*************************___________
echo _________*************************____________
echo _________*************************____________
echo _________************************_____________
echo _________*************************____________
echo __________************************____________
echo ___________************************___________
echo ___________***************************________
echo ____________*************************_________
echo _____________***********************__________
echo _______________*******************____________
echo _________________***_________****_____________
echo ______________________________________________
echo:
echo:
goto 3
:3
Pause
goto end
:end

This will print Windows logo if chosen as 1, Apple logo if chosen as 2, and exit if chosen as 3.

In this manner you can make any Diagram you want with notepad. If you want a transparent notepad to outline a picture then you may try Glass Notepad. I used this to quickly sketch on the logos and make this.

13. Start your programs faster

Normally when you try to start a program such as firefox, then it goes through some levels.. But you may be wanting to start some programs such as, check windows firewall or registry editor.. These files are located in System32 folder and opening them manually is a headache.

Here is a simple way to make your own portable program starter:

@ echo off
echo Use this to open your programs faster
echo:
echo Select 1 for notepad, 2 for firewall options, 3 for registry editor… Select 4 to exit…
set /p m=Type 1, 2, or 3, and press enter:
echo:
if %m%==1 goto 1
if %m%==2 goto 2
if %m%==3 goto 3
if %m%==4 goto exit
:1
start %windir%\System32\Notepad
goto exit
:2
start %windir%\System32\WF.msc
goto exit
:3
start %windir%\System32\regedt32.exe
goto exit
:exit

Try it and replace the values in bold to your choice…

14. Check your internet Details

Advanced users can check their ip configuration whenever they want. This is really helpful for people who try to mask their IP many times or people who have a dynamic IP.

Open notepad and type the following:

@echo off
ipconfig
PAUSE

Save this file as IPconfig.bat and run the file whenever you want to test your internet configuration…

15. Clear your DNS cache

Lets say that you have visited a web site and you don’t want anyone else to know what site you’ve visited. A few things are, clearing all your web browser temporary files, clearing thumbnails, etc. But did you know that this data is stored on your Internet Server as well ? This means if you’re using Airtel Broadband, then they’ll keep track of what you’ve seen and save it for future use.

Clean up all history

To check what files are stored, just check your dns using the following code in notepad:
@echo off
ipconfig/displaydns
PAUSE

Save the file in notepad as CheckDNS.bat and run the file.

You will get a very very huge list.

To clear this, just clear your dns using this simple code in notepad:
@echo off
ipconfig/flushdns
PAUSE

Save the file as clearDNS.bat and run the file.

This will clear your DNS cache completely.

Try them out and tell us how you liked it……

10 Awesome Notepad Tricks

[ad#ad-2]

Notepad

Notepad is the default text editor in the Microsoft Windows OS. Many people prefer alternatives to notepad such as Notepad++, but did you know that notepad can do much more than just view and edit text ? In fact, I’ll tech you how to make a fake virus using notepad so that you can fool your friends :P

Here are some awesome trick you can do with notepad…..

1. Log Diary Trick
Have you ever wanted to make your own diary on your computer ? Why not try notepad..

LOG Notepad Trick

  • Open notepad
  • Type .LOG
  • Save the file as LOG.txt

Now when you open notepad, the date and time will automatically be inserted. Write anything you want and the date and time is auto inserted. Your own notepad Diary :)

Bush Hid The Facts 4335 Rule

2. The 4335 Rule
This trick may not work on all computers
This has been surprising users for quite some time. When you enter a few secret codes, notepad hides them.

  • Open notepad and type in BUSH HID THE FACTS
  • Close notepad and open it again to see the magic

Can you read it again ? This is called the 4335 Rule. This means, if the first word is four words, the second and third as three words, and the fourth as five words, then you follow the 4335 rule and the text is hidden.

The same happens with this app can break.

3. Open a file using notepad
Here is a simple trick to open any file or program with notepad.

Open notepad and type the following:

Start path of file

Then save the file as Shortcut.bat
Please note that the file type should be kept as ALL FILES while saving it as a .bat file.

Change path of file with your actual file path. For example if you have a file called run with an extension .exe in the folder TEST in C:\ drive, then your path should be something like this: C:\TEST\run.exe

If you want to open some complicated programs such as Firefox, then use this code:

START /d “path of folderprogram.extension

Change path of folder with the actual path of the folder, and put the name of the program with its extension. For example if you have a file called run with an extension of .exe in the folder TEST in C:\ drive, then your code should be something like this: START /d “C:\TEST” run.exe

4. Make Questions
Want to make something interactive ? Need to make questions ? Here is an example of a question made with notepad where the user got the answer correct.

Question Fun PC Life Notepad Trick

To do this, just type the following code in notepad.

@ECHO OFF
ECHO:
ECHO ………………………………………..
ECHO PRESS 1 or 2 to select your task, or 3 to EXIT.
ECHO ………………………………………..
ECHO.
ECHO 1 – This info was given by Fun PC Life
ECHO 2 – This info was not given by Fun PC Life
ECHO 3 – EXIT
ECHO.
SET /P M=Type 1, 2, or 3, then press ENTER:
echo:
IF %M%==1 GOTO Correct
IF %M%==2 GOTO Wrong
IF %M%==3 GOTO EXIT
:Correct
echo You are right !!
GOTO END
:Wrong
echo You are wrong. This info was really given by Fun PC Life
GOTO END
:END
PAUSE
goto EXIT
:EXIT

Now save the file as Question.bat and run the file.
Please note that the file type should be kept as ALL Files while saving it as a .bat file.

You can modify the code for your convenience. Change the bold text and try it out.

5. Make the Matrix
Matrix Bat

To make this, open notepad and type the following:
@echo off
color 2
:start
echo %random% %random% %random% %random% %random% %random% %random% %random% %random% %random% %random% %random% %random% %random%
goto start

Save this file as Matrix.bat
Make sure the file type is kept as ALL FILES while saving it as a .bat file.

Open the saved file and see the magic.

6. Alternative Single Character Matrix
Single Character Matrix

Type in the following in notepad:

@echo off
color 0a
:A
echo 7 y x 3 W 8 G M P q 1 F 0 U v c i j O D s a E I j H 9 t 6 7 z C B 4 g 8 3 W 8 G
ping localhost -n 1 > nul
goto A

Save the file as Matrix2.bat and run the file.
The file type should be kept as ALL FILES while saving a .bat file.

7. Lock Folders using Notepad
This trick may not work on all computers

Lets say you want to lock a folder named PICS in your D:\ drive , whose path is D:\PICS

Then the code should be something like this:
ren pics pics.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}

Pics is your folder name. Use the name of the folder in place for pics. Save the text file as lock.bat in the same drive.

To unlock this locked folder:

Open another new notepad text file and type the following:
ren pics.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D} pics

Save the text file as key.bat in the same drive. Here again, pics is the name of the folder. Change it to the folder you want to lock.

8. Make a fake Virus POP UP
Type the following code in notepad:

@echo off
msg * WARNING
msg * VIRUS ENTERED YOUR PC

Save the file as pop.bat and run it. You should get two pop up messages. There has been an issue on some computers, but it should work on most computers.

9. Create a command prompt Virus message
Fake Command Prompt Virus Message

Type the following in notepad:

@ echo off
title Virus
echo Your system is affected by virus
PAUSE
echo:
echo Windows will now try to undo changes
PAUSE
echo:
echo FAILED !
PAUSE
echo:
echo Your system is corrupt
PAUSE

Save the file as virus.bat and run the file.

10. Test your antivirus by EICAR STANDARD ANTIVIRUS TEST
Now, you can check if your antivirus really works. Type the following in notepad:

X5O!P%@AP[4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*

Save the file as virus-test.txt
Scan the file. If your antivirus detects this file as a virus and tries to remove it, then you can be sure your antivirus is a good one. This is a much easier way, than actually downloading a virus to test it. This sample virus code is perfectly harmless and allows you to test your antivirus. A good antivirus like MS Security Essentials will detect this test virus even before you scan it.

That's all the tricks I'm sharing, at least for now. All the tricks above are perfectly safe and will not harm your computer in any way. There are many destructive notepad tricks as well, like making a real virus which kills the Operating System, but personally, I believe that is only meant for developers who want to make their OS security better. Use these tricks in your best behavior :)

Try these out and give us your comments......

A Complete Guide on Assembling a Gaming PC

[ad#suk1]

This post is gonna be too interesting for gamers like me. I was a hardcore gamer and also assembled few PC’s so I thought I could help out some of the people who are going to assemble one or just upgrade it.

We will starts from basic to the top. I will also describe what this thing does and will also describe some additional information with it.

Lets start.

Introduction:

Gaming PCs are generally assembled so that they deliver maximum performance while gaming. A guy does not wants to get stuck on 5-6 fps (Frames Per Second) while playing GTA IV. Well too embarrassing. It needs the correct configuration. By correct configuration I mean that  we don’t place a Nvidia 7300 with Intel Core i7. In this configuration the processor’s power will go waste.

Components:

  • Case: Case is the first thing one should keep in mind as the case describes the Motherboard form factor and the SMPS(Power Supply Unit). A case should be well ventilated as long hours of gaming may take the temperatures to as high as 90 C. Take a case with at least two fans as the heat will also degrade the PC’s performance. Cases range from Rs 500 to Rs 20,000. Some well known manufacturing companies are Cooler Master, iBall, Thermal take and others. Choose the best considering the upper points which fits your budget.
  • Processor: Processor is the unit which is more important that the GPU (Graphics card). The more powerful the processor the better gaming experience. The Processors are manufactured by two leading companies Intel and AMD. Check out the processor with best performance in your budget. Make sure it’s socket is compatible with your Motherboard. Also the thing that most people confuse with. AMD’s motherboard are different from Intel’s motherboard. A motherboard ment for using with AMD processor won’t fit an Intel Processor.
  • Motherboard: This is the main component as all the hardware you are gonna buy is ultimately getting fit into this board. Choose the board with atleast 1 PCIe Express 2.0 slot(For 1GPU) and supports your processor. You an opt for more than 1 Slots if you want to crosfire two GPUs. Also check what memory modules would your motherboard support. Most gaming motherboards are made by Asus, Gigabyte, MSI & Biostar.
  • RAM: Most games today(I am not talking about solitaire) spit on 1GB Ram. Check the speed, module your motherboard supports and buy Ram accordingly. Minimum recommended ram for a gaming pc is 2GB. Maximum can be taken to anywhere like my friend from Germany has 16GB Ram installed which even laughs at my 4GB. Ram’s come in different varities according to their clock speed and other factors. Most gamers use Rams by OCZ, Gskill, Silicon power or other but we can work it out with cheap one like kingston.
  • GPU: GPU aka The Video Card is the life of the gaming PC. Video Cards range from Rs 1000 to Rs 40000. And SLI(Nvidia) or crosfire(ATI) costs even more. Check out the GPU which has a good performance with a PCI 2.0 Support, Latest DirectX 10 or 11 support, DDR3 or above memory type, and other features which suits your need. The GPU I used was MSI ATI Radeon 4850 1GB OC Edition which cost me Rs12000 1 month after its launch. You can also install 2 or more GPU according to your Mot herboard and SMPS. The best chipsets are available from ATI and Nvidia and the manufacturers are MSI, Asus, Palit, Sapphire etc.
  • Display: Choose a monitor with a bigger screen for better experience and a high resolution. Check out the monitors refresh rate, response rate and others. Get a screen of about 20″ or you could also attach the LCD or Plasma with HDMI port of your GPU.
  • SMPS: SMPS is the power supply unit of your CPU. Choose a SMPS which meets minimum requirement of your GPU and supports its connectors. i recommend to buy this from a branded company as it handles all the responsibility of saving your PC from the voltage fluctuations or other shit. Major producers are Coolermaster, Zebronics, Targus & others.
  • HDD: Get a good Hard Disk with enough storage space to meet your future requirements. I recommend minimum 500GBs as games can be as large as 20GB. Get hard disks from Seagate, Western Digital and samsung.

Additional Items:

  • FANS: Choose some extra fan as they are often cheap and will give your PC a long life.
  • Sound Cards: For people who are just crazy about sound quality pick up a Sound card but they are too expensive.
  • Disk Drive: They can be bought according to your wish.
  • Keyboard and mouse: Keyboard and mouse have a different category for gaming. There are many types available but they aren’t cheap.

My Gaming PC Configuration:

Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E7400 @ 2.8GHZ

Motherboard: A crapy one Intel DG31 something

HDD: 500 GB WD

GPU: MSI ATI Radeon 4850 1 GB OC Edition

RAM: 4 GB kingston.

Display: LG 19″ LCD

Case: I ball something.

Please excuse for any mistake as I am not used for writing long article. Drop a comment in the post if you have any question. :-)

Set Default Console Foreground & Background colors for command prompt

[ad#sid1]

command-promptThis is a simple technique to change the foreground as well as background colors of your command prompt.

Syntax: color [attrib]

here attrib specifies the color attributes of console output.

The color attrib is specified by a 2 hex-digit code which first digit represents the background and second digit represents the  foreground color.

It will be bit boring if you have continued your work on the same platform. So let us make our work bit interesting while we are working on the command prompt for running out Java or Tasm/Masm programs by changing the foreground and background colors.

This is a simple technique. Lets us finally navigate to our process.

  1. Open your command prompt.
  2. Then type “color fc
  3. This will display the “text in red” with “bright white background.
  4. You can make use of lots of other combinations. Just type “help color“.
  5. You can select around 16 different attributes to set your color for the command prompt.
  6. Then arises a million dollar question, how to set it to default screen after doing this. Just type “color” and press “enter” it will restores the color to what it was when the “cmd.exe” was started or else it will appears same a before after closing and restarting the command prompt.

Step 6:

You Decide to Go One Step Further, You Try to Google Whatever happened and you are keen how to enable the extensions on Google Chrome. Your Query which you Google will be How to enable extensions in Google Chrome

6 How to Enable Google Extensions

Step 7:
After Getting Quite a lot of Search Results you would have landed into some Forums with discussions where they teach how to Change your Google Chrome Path or edit the registry key using regedit. Example

XP
“C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe”

Simply add “–enable-extensions” without the quotes to the end and close out regedit.

Now it should read:
“C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe” –enable-extensions

I recommend you NOT to Change any paths or edit registry.
