Google Nexus 7 (Tablet)

Google might of surprised us with the awesome Google Glasses Demo they showed off at I/O this year but the next best thing an affordable tablet that even a parent on the Family Tax Benefit* in Australia can afford. Google announce the Nexus 7, and of course its a tablet. The new Android slate running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, with an amazing 1.3GHz NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor, and of course a big 7 inch screen resolution of 1280×800.

The tablet which comes with 1GB of RAM (Random Access Memory), 1300 MHZ quad processor, and also comes with Google Chrome for android as its default browser. One of greatest features with the tablet (in my opinion) is that the screen is scratch resistance. So if your like me that throw my keys in my bag with my electronics the chances of the screen being scratched is very slim. And this seems to be a feature lacking in many of the current Android tablets available on the retail market.

The only issue i have with the Nexus 7 is that you don’t have a SD card slot for expandable memory, basically your stuck with the basic Nexus 7 internal memory with 8000MB (about 6.6GB) of available space. However the tablet does have USB 2.0 ports and Micro USB support.

The Nexus 7 built my Asus also comes with Accelerometer, Gyroscope, Compass, Voice commands, Voice recording sensors and features. The Nexus 7 Tablet is to be released in the third quarter of 2012 in the US and its RRP (Recommended Retail Price) should be around the $200 range according to Google.

Google Wallet’s arrival! What is it?

Officially announced this Thursday, Google wallet has arrived in US bringing brand new changes to online payment systems. With Google wallet you can just wave your mobile on Mastercard paypass terminals and the payment will automatically be made.

Yes it is that easy. This facility has been currently introduced only on the Nexus S handsets. Google wallet works only on NFC (Near-Field-Communications) based smartphones. According to engadget, this service also works on non-NFC phones but will require a NFC sticker instead.

How does it work: The working is pretty simple.Your card number and all the transaction information is encrypted and stored on a tamper-proof chip from NXP Semiconductor onto the smartphone. Google is calling this functionality as the “Secure Element”, according to CNET. Customers just need to enter their PIN to open the Google wallet application and carry on their transactions.

What If? Yes exactly, i was too wondering about that. Fortunately there are no What If’s!!! Google has assured us that if there be a chance that your phone is lost your banking credentials will not be compromised and your financial entities will be left intact. A thief should firstly have to bypass your smartphone security and then has to bypass Google Wallet App security. That’s not as easy as it sounds. Bypassing Google Wallet security is no child’s game, if the app senses a wrong password has been entered too many times, the SECURE ELEMENT locks in itself. No transactions can be carried out in this state and can only be revived by resetting it. Successful reset can be performed only when a secret combination is entered provided by the issuing bank, the Trusted Service Manager and the user. Same is the procedure if you forget your PIN.

Google Wallet is currently only available in US, but slowly it will hit our streets too. Google has described a nice and simple pictorial representation of how Google Wallet works, check it out over here.

Don’t forget to share your comment on this story! We would like to know your opinion of what do you think about the new Google Wallet. Will it prove to be a success and replace Paypal and all other online payment services or will you review your options and then decide?

Google Nexus – Will this beat the hell out of iPhone??

The term Google has become synonymous with “search”. Youtube remains one of the most popular video sharing site. Orkut is one of the most popular social networking websites. With almost every product of Google hitting the jackpot, it remains to be seen if they can sustain their winning streak. This January, Google launches Nexus One – a formidable competitor to the high end mobile phones that are currently ruling the market.

Google had earlier given its employees this “little toy” to play around with. And with reports of its first look and features being discussed at length, expectations have sky rocketed.Reportedly, Nexus One is the fastest smartphones which supports a 1Ghz SnapDragon CPU. The closest phone to this is Motorola’s Droid which has a 600Mhz processor, far far behind Nexus.

Nexus is built on Android 2.1 Operating System. It boasts of a 3.7 inch display, a microSD card slot that can be extended upto 32GB, a 5 Mega pixel camera, 512 MB of ROM & 512 MB of RAM. And what more? Nexus is touted to be one of the sleekest mobile phones, thinner that even the iPhone!!

But the big question that critics are posing is “Does Nexus One offer something new?” Well…we are not sure.First of al, Android 2.1 is only slightly better than its predecessor Android 2.0. Moreover, though it is capable of supporting the much anticipated “multi-touch” feature, Google has decided not to support this in Nexus One.This will be a major disappointment to users worldwide.

Consumers in the US have another reason to worry. Nexus One will not work on AT & T’s 3G network but will be available only on the slower EDGE network (also by AT&T). The high cost ($530) is also likely to dissuade consumers. Currently, the most popular phone in the US is priced at $270, much much lesser than Nexus One.

Nexus One seems to be one of Google’s ambitious products. So…will this beat the hell out of Apple’s iPhone??
Well…we need to wait and watch!
