Ways to Permanently Solve Bad Reception

improve-reception

Cellular signal has never been more vital. From checking email updates on-the-go, to calling mom, to prepping for a date, to getting a ride in the middle of rush hour, productivity demands good reception. If you think arriving at the office only to realize you left your phone at home is bad, imagine if you somehow find yourself in an area with poor signal. While advances in mobile technology unceasingly pick up more speed as time passes, improvement in mobile signal hasn’t been as fast. So, what are your options in this situation?

Check your exact location.

Is there anything around you that could be blocking reception? Indoors, your phone is less able to detect mobile signal. Are you underground like in a basement or a subway? Or maybe you’re in an elevator? Phone reception is known to have difficulty penetrating these areas, resulting in calls cutting short, sending SMS texts fail, and your Facebook loses connection to data. Going on higher ground in a clear area where there’s less obstruction. Although it might sound silly but have you considered your hand might be blocking signal? Research on where the antenna is on your cellphone. If you find out your hand’s position has been causing the problem this whole time, change it. Newer phones mostly have their antennas placed at the bottom. When you find out this is the case with your phone, try holding it upside down. Use earphones with a mic to solve the problem with the microphone.

Install a femtocell.

Also known as microcells, these are small towers that connect to a phone reception using your internet connection. This is particularly advisable for places where there’s no signal at all. One condition to keep in mind, though, is your internet connection should have powerful downloading speed. Femtocells can provide signal to even older phone models before the era of Wi-Fi. The downside is these come at a high price, offer coverage for only one network and isn’t compatible with LTE broadband.

Switch to a 2G network.

While 3G, 4G and LTE networks are more powerful, these newer technological advancements have less towers. The farther a device is from the source of reception, the weaker the signal it catches. Your area might not be serviced yet with a nearby transmission tower and it might not be as fast as older phones. Avoid expecting stellar reception and stick to less data-hungry online activities when using the internet.

Use a signal booster.

It’s also called, “cell phone repeaters.” They catch your network’s weak signal and repeat it but boosted as the name means. It also sends back this increased signal to the tower to make sure there’s a smooth flow in exchanging personal comments, etc. If you plan to use it for different carriers, get an omnidirectional antenna can do just that. There are different kinds of boosters. Some you can attach to cars, roofs of RVs and others are more mobile such as the cradle. The latter said it can support only one network but it’s the most affordable alternative.

Data Complexity Is Rapidly Changing The Face Of Business

Over the last few years, data rather than instinct has started to drive business decision-making. This is a profound shift and one that is likely to accelerate in the future. Machines with sophisticated algorithms will be making decisions that are better than those that could be made by people, implying that the future will be a lot stranger than we might think.

Already we see this in action. Stock traders are mostly gone, being replaced by artificial intelligence systems that can operate much faster and take on board more information. Also, some companies are hiring artificial intelligence programs to their boards and giving them a vote on critical decisions in the enterprise.

data-complexity-3

Flickr

While the ability of machines to interpret data is getting better all the time, businesses themselves are collecting more of the stuff. Some have argued, including Cynthia Johnson, a digital marketing guru who contributes to Forbes magazine, that managers themselves who don’t have any technical training will also be able to manage data and gain useful insights.

So the real next question for businesses is how they can better collect and interpret data?

Accessibility

To really make the most of all the data at our disposal, businesses have to focus on changing their corporate culture. Many companies that once operated in traditional industries are changing the very nature of their firms. Even firms that we typically think of as high-tech, like Google, are changing their raison d’etre. For instance, Google was once an internet search firm, but today it describes itself as an “AI first” company, interested in using artificial intelligence to improve the experience of its customers. If you happen to be needing a laser cutter for steel you can find it at a good price at boss lacer.

data-complexity-1

Pixabay

Businesses are also refocusing the human element of their enterprises. It’s not enough to just be able to perform a role like “marketing” anymore. Businesses are looking for people who have both traditional marketing skills alongside technical skills, like big data analysis.

The best companies will find novel ways to reduce the costs of interpreting the data and spread the benefits as widely as possible within their organizations. Data shouldn’t be too complex for non-technical colleagues to understand, allowing the company to take full advantage of all the data that they collect.

Adopt Best Practice

Companies that rely on big data also need a data disaster recovery to minimize downtime. With the reliance on data growing at an ever-increasing speed, those businesses that survive will be those that who are most able to keep their operations going.

Information Optimization

The best teams are those that are on the same page. By all means have people on your team who can use NoSQL, Hadoop, and Apache, but don’t restrict data insights to this small cadre of individuals. Make sure that they are regularly sharing their findings with the wider team. Companies need to invest in so-called business intelligence software that allows them to easily create and present data in ways that people will understand. It’s out with the regression models and in with the visualization dashboards.

Increased Visibility

Finally, companies, according to Cynthia, need to focus on the visibility of their data by providing colleagues with the training and tools they need to access it.

Office Tech is All Well and Good, But How Can Technology be Used to Reach and Engage Customers Better?

All businesses use technology in the office. They have the latest computers, and all kinds of other tech and gadgets. That’s great, but what about using technology and software to reach customers and engage with them better? This is what’s most important. And if you’re going to invest in technology, you will want it to have an impact on the amount of customers you have and the number of sales you make. So, definitely give this some thought if you haven’t done so already.

If you don’t know how you can use technology in this way, there are some great ideas below. You just need to modify them so that they apply to your company. Of course, every company is different. So, some of the ideas will work for your brand and others won’t. But using technology to reach out to and engage customers is not something that you can ignore, no matter what industry you run a business in. It’s simply not an option, so read on to start learning more right now.

Use Videos to Make Product Tours

Product tours are online videos that allow people to get a close look at what your company has to offer before they make a purchase. It’s something that you should definitely create if you want to allow people to buy with confidence. People like to know what they are paying for before they actually hand over their money. It’s much better than simply giving customers two or three photos to look at on your website. All you need is a camera, lighting and editing software to make it happen. Put in some effort and make them look professional if you can. If you don’t know how to edit a website or even create one, there are easy options out there like wordpress who make easy for you to create it, and there is also cheap shared hosting plan, so is easy to put your website out for the world to see.

Giving Customers New Ways to Browse and Buy

Giving your customers more ways to browse and buy from you can only be a positive step. Creating apps allows you to do exactly that, so why not try it out? Apps are a big deal for so many businesses nowadays. It makes sense for you to jump onboard and create an app too. They allow your customers to browse your content or online store on their phones so easily and whenever or wherever suits them. Companies like Wonderment Apps can help you to create an app if you don’t know how to do it yourself.

Use Technology to Ask Customer What They Think

What your customers think matters a lot. So, why not ask them directly? The days of having to spend a long time sending out questionnaires or phoning people up are gone. You simply don’t have to do that anymore. Instead, you can just ask questions on social media and ask people to tell you what they think. Of course, you might get some silly responses. But plenty of people will be more than happy to give you their honest thoughts and feedback. This can then be used to improve the business and make it more appealing to customers.

Creating Content That Makes People Want to Share It

Creating content is something that all modern businesses should do. It could be written or video content. You could even record a podcast if you want to. What matters most is how people receive that content and what they choose to do with it. From your point of view, you want people to share it as many times as possible. If a piece of content can go viral, the business will instantly be given a big boost in terms of brand awareness and recognition, which can only be a good thing.

Host Contests and Competitions on Social Media

Social media is a great tool for engaging with customers, and it should be used in a way that is creative and playful. If you can make that happen, you won’t have any problems getting your company to where you want it to be. One idea to consider is hosting contests and competitions on social media. These allow people to win something in return for coming up with the best response to one of your tweets or posts. It could be a caption competition or anything you can imagine. As long as it gets people interested and engaged, it doesn’t really matter.

Using Analytics to Understand Consumer Behaviour Better

Analytics are very important in the world of business these days. If they are not already being used by your business, now is the time to change that. By using analytics, you can get to know your customers better, as well as how they behave when it comes to buying from you and other brands. You can then tweak and change your marketing and advertising techniques to make it easier for your company to reach people and sell to them consistently. Look into it and see how it could help you improve your company.

Speeding Up Sales When Store Queues Are Long

If you have long queues in your store, you might be able to use technology to speed them up a little. Of course, no business owner is going to complain about too many people wanting to buy from them. But there is a limit on how many people you can handle before those queues are simply too big. It can put off customers as well. If they see huge queues, they will be tempted to buy from somewhere else instead. You can use handheld card payment devices to approach people in the queue and allow them to pay that way. It will cut those lines drastically.

Increase Targeting When Advertising

Targeting should play a big part in your overall advertising efforts these days. There are so many people out there, and you need to be sure that you are reaching the right ones with your message. If you are only reaching people in demographics that have very little interest in what you’re advertising, you won’t see the sales you want. Facebook advertising is known for having fantastic targeting potential, so take advantage of this. There are so many ways in which you can target customers, but it should start with market research.

Offering Customers Another Reason to Enter Your Store

Your customers might not need another reason to enter your store. But it doesn’t hurt to give them as many reasons as possible. That way, you can attract new customers who might not have thought of stepping inside before. You could offer people free wifi inside your store, for example. Or you might want to offer a different service. Some brands even put food stalls and small restaurant spaces inside their premises to tempt more people in. The wifi trick is a great way to use technology to tempt more people inside, though.

Using Push Notifications to Increase Short-Term Sales

If you haven’t heard of them before, push notifications are simply the little notifications you get on your phone. They come from apps that you have installed. So, if your business has an app, why not start using push notifications. They offer you a great way to deliver a message to people directly. If you do that, you will find that you can increase short-term sales. For example, you can send out a push notification telling people that your products have 25% for the next couple of hours. This will cause people to rush to your app or website in order to make a purchase.

Small Businesses Should Build Groups

Small businesses tend to have small customer bases, at least, to begin with they do. This is not a bad thing, though. Of course, business owners always want to grow the number of customers they have. But you can take advantage of a small following by building a solid community around the brand. So, use things like Facebook groups or the equivalent on Google+ to keep people in the loop. It’s a great way to make the business and its customers feel closer and more cohesive, so give it a try. It could be one of the most positive steps you take.

Taking Questions and Complaints Rapidly on Social Media

No business owner wants their customers to have complaints or problems. But these things happen, and no business can avoid them completely. What’s most important is how these things are dealt with. If you have a process for dealing with them in a way that’s fast and simple, your customers will be easier to keep happy. But if you make them wait around without offering them any idea of when they will be seen to, you could lose that customer forever. So, use social media to take questions and complaints rapidly. They can then be given a reply in moments.

All of the ideas above can help you to reach out to customers and engage with them better. These days, that’s something that is vitally important. If you can’t build those relationships with customers, they won’t stay loyal to your brand and keep buying from it. So, make use of the advice found above and put some of those ideas into action as soon as possible.

Collect Data for a Personalized Experience

Personalizing the customer experience is becoming more and more popular. By collecting data and using algorithms and other tools, you can make each customer’s experience unique. You can start with marketing to customers, especially online. When you collect information about their habits, you can do a variety of things. For example, you can recommend products similar to the ones they were looking at before. You can create adverts that have their name in them or send newsletters that are personalized too. These can help to make customer experiences more human and improve relationships.

While your website can help, it’s also a good idea to consider a mobile app. An app can be a dedicated channel that customers can use for a variety of things. They can use it to hold their personal details, from orders they have placed to payment options. You can hire app developers to create a unique app for your brand. It needs to be useful for your customers and not just there for the sake of it. Remember that your app can also be web-based, as well as being available on mobile devices.

Offering several different ways for your customers to pay makes the customer experience better tailored for each individual.

It’s not hard to use technology for a better customer experience. Investing in new tech could be the right thing to do.

Antivirus

4 Things Your Antivirus Won’t Help With

Modern antivirus programs offer real-time protection against viruses, spyware, malware and Trojans. In fact, the most advanced programs scan for patterns of software behavior that are known to occur in malicious programs and stop them in their tracks.

However, despite all the touted benefits of antivirus software, there are a number of security areas where your antivirus won’t be of much help and you may need to take other measures to mitigate the risk.

1. Unknown Threats

Creators of malicious code are just as good at their jobs as their computer security counterparts. They test their malware thoroughly and study how antivirus programs work in order to devise new methods to beat them. Attackers constantly study software programs to find vulnerabilities they can exploit before the software makers find and patch them. It’s a cat and mouse game where the cat never seems to get the mouse. In 2015 alone, there were over 84 million malware samples detected by a leading computer security firm. That’s a staggering revelation of the sheer size, resources and determination of the underground malware industry. In fact, there is a raise in virus and threats online affecting the crucial data on your system. Therefore, it is hightime for you to run data recovery software like EaseUS on your PC.

2. Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs)

As opposed to regular threats whose intention is commonly to cause damage to the network or computer, the main aim of an Advanced Persistent Threat is to steal high value information such as trade or military secrets, financial data or information that could be used for extortion. APT targets are usually big corporations and governments. Perpetrators are large groups of organized criminals and in some cases, governments. Many governments secretly run APT programs targeting local and foreign companies as well other governments.

Antivirus

APT perpetrators have the singular goal of remaining undetected for as long as possible and gain ongoing access. To gain access to a system, an APT attack will typically begin with spear fishing or social engineering. Spear fishing is similar to email phishing, the only difference being that in spear fishing, an email message appears to have been sent by a trusted person within the organization. For example, a group of employees could receive an email that appears to come from a network administrator asking them to log onto a phony page and update their employee details. The fake page captures the login data and the perpetrators immediately access the network and establish numerous back doors by moving laterally across the network. It only takes one employee to fall for the ploy for it to be successful.
One of the most effective ways to detect an APT is to study outbound data. Any sudden and unexplained increase in outbound could be an indication of an ongoing attack. Other tell tale signs could be an unusually high number of spear fishing and social engineering attempts as well as a sudden increase in late night log-ons when few or no staff work at night.

Mitigation can also be achieved through constant training and retraining of staff to recognize spear fishing and social engineering, and to report any attempts immediately.

3. Infected Devices

In the last few years there has been a proliferation in the use of mobile devices such as smartphones, tablets and laptops. Around the world, most people now access the Internet more times in a day using a mobile device as opposed to a traditional desktop computer. This has created a vulnerability outside the initial intention of antivirus software.

For example, businesses operating Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) programs where employees use their own hardware, are at risk. An employee using an infected device to connect to a network can inadvertently spread malware throughout the network. The same thing can occur when a guest connects to your home network. Usage of free data recovery software like EaseUS can help you restore the network settings stored on your computer’s hard disk.

The risks presented by BYOD can be mitigated by:

  • A dedicated firewall.
  • Tightening network security.
  • Enforcing malware scans for new and existing devices connecting to the network.

4. Inside Job

The final risk your free antivirus software will not be able to help you with is an inside job. In this case, every employee is a potential threat that the employer has to live with. And, administrators pose the biggest threat. Perpetrators may be driven by any number of motivations running the gamut from malice and financial gain to external blackmail. Inside jobs are difficult to guard against. The best mitigation is to have a system of checks and balances such as the maker checker rule. Also, staff that occupy sensitive positions should be continuously vetted to ensure they don’t pose a security threat. Click for more information on this

Conclusion

It is clear that in addition to having the best antivirus systems in place, there is a need to understand the threat landscape and remain constantly updated on emerging computer threats and best practices on mitigation.

Don’t Let Customers Forget About You!

There are thousands of sites across the web that customers and users have completely forgotten about. Once upon a time, these sites might have had hundreds of views and clicks. Now, they are dead spaces with no interest from consumers at all. Why does this happen? Usually, it’s because the business owner has allowed customers to forget. When you run a company, you must do everything you can to keep the ideas of your business brand alive and not just let them fade. For instance, you might build a business around releasing innovative tech. With this brand image, you can’t just release one piece of technology and ride it to success. You have to keep delivering fresh possibilities to customers and consumers. You must remind them why they bought from you in the first place. A large part of this is about marketing and how you promote your company.

SEO, despite what some people believe, isn’t a one and done solution. It needs to be constantly built on and expanded. You have to do what you can to keep your business on the first page of the SERPs. Or build towards reaching that position. Don’t forget that online users often have low attention spans. They won’t spend hours searching for a business. Instead, they will click on one of the first ones that they find. Assuming the website is attractive, they will stick with it for quite some time. That’s why SEO must be your first position of attack. You need to make sure that you get customers to your site. We suggest hiring the services of a professional marketing agency. They will be able to improve and adapt your SEO so that you continue to get the interest of customers.

Going Viral

If a piece of content goes viral online, it reaches a wide range of users in a small period. That could be up to a million shares in under one hour. Doing this is not easy, but it’s a skill that you can learn. The first thing that you’ll need to do is identify your target customer. These are the people who are going to be most interested in your content and who will share it. Once you know who these individuals are, you need to focus on building a story. Story building is important for viral content. If you look at a viral content guide, you’ll see that you need to create a narrative the target customer can follow. Do this and you should have no issues making sure they share and marketing your content for you.

A-B Testing

4-customer-focussed

Pixabay

You need to run A-B testing on your site frequently. A-B testing is the process of running two versions of the site at the same time. The differences between these versions are subtle, yet often important. It could be the difference between getting a sale and losing a customer. If you don’t do this, you may find that your CRO is ineffective. By constantly improving your site, you are keeping it free and update with the desires of the consumer. As such, they have no reason to use a competitor instead.

Following this advice, your customers won’t lose interest in your online business. They will always come back for more.

Could Virtual Reality Propel Your Business To The Next Level?

Could Virtual Reality Propel Your Business To The Next Level?

When it comes to business, it often pays to stay ahead of the crowd. Are you a business owner? Are you thinking of launching a new firm? If so, you may be on the lookout for the next big thing. Innovation often saves times and money, and it can set you apart from your rivals. If you’re eager to impress your clients or make your company more efficient, you may consider employing virtual reality. This is an increasingly diverse and versatile form of technology, which could help to propel your business to the dizzy heights.

About virtual reality

Virtual reality is a type of technology, which takes you into a virtual world. In this different dimension, you can interact with characters and experience sensory triggers. You can enter a new reality by wearing a headset, using headphones or utilizing software. This concept has long been popular in the gaming industry. But it is now making waves in all kinds of different arenas, and it offers advantages for many business owners.

How could virtual reality benefit me?

If you’re starting your own business from home, you may not want mail arriving at your door or tons of envelopes clogging up your drawers. The solution: a virtual mailbox. By employing an affordable virtual mailing service, you can save space, and make your business more efficient. If you have a virtual inbox, the service will scan mail you receive, creating a virtual copy. You can keep up to date with your post and save and share letters without taking up valuable storage space.

Virtual reality has already proved revolutionary in the health industry. Corporations that work with medical schools for example, are offering VR training. This enables students to hone their practical skills. Dentists are also keen to embrace this trend. Many people suffer from dental anxiety, and studies have shown that virtual reality headsets help them to feel more relaxed. A golden sandy beach is a much less threatening environment than a clinical dental office.

Retailers and hospitality firms are also benefitting from this exciting new technology. Thanks to virtual reality, consumers can now see a 360-degree representation of products they are interested in. You can also take virtual tours around bars, hotels, and wedding venues. This gives you a much better idea of what a location looks like than simple photographic images.

Another important use of virtual technology is training. Using specially designed programs, employees can practice in a mock setting. If you’re worried about public speaking, you can increase your confidence by rehearsing in front of a virtual audience. You can also act out practical scenarios without any risk to yourself or others. You can also communicate with hundreds of different people at the same time without incurring significant costs.

Succeeding in the modern world is tough for a new business owner. Sometimes, you need that extra special USP to catapult you to the next level. Virtual reality technology could be just the ticket if you want to outclass the competitors and impress new clients.

How The Right Tech Makes A Lean, Mean Fighting Machine Of A Business

How The Right Tech Makes A Lean, Mean Fighting Machine Of A Business

Productivity and efficiency are two crucial metrics for a successful business. If time is getting wasted and work isn’t getting done right, then you have a serious problem on your hands. When you’re in the thick of it, it can be hard to define the problem and find a solution. That’s why you need to take a step back and find the tools that show you the way. Let’s look at how the right tech approach can make a much more focused and work-efficient business.

Make sure you have a system that’s prepared

One of the biggest problems for any office is trying to make a change with an IT system that doesn’t let them. Too many use part-timers to set up an IT system, only calling them in when they need them. That’s a slow and ineffective method. You need to have an IT that’s set-up to grow and move forward with the business from the get-go. A virtual chief information officer that’s always connected and always ready. Not a part-timer, but a third-party that’s focused solely on making IT systems that are forward thinking. That can even help you find the tech solutions to some of your specific issues an even find the problems in your system before they appear, is always better let the things to the experts like Bennet Office Technologies of Willmar Minnesota.

Keep everyone in the loop

Communication can be a hassle in any business. If everyone is stuck to their computers by necessity, that can add another barrier to good communication. Or it can act as a bridge to it. Poor communication leads to the poor prioritization of a workload. It can even result in tasks disappearing into the ether, entirely forgotten. Help employees focus on the movements of the business as a whole as well as their individual workloads. A good to-do list app can help anyone prioritize their working day and ensure nothing’s lost in the gaps. Meanwhile, project management software keeps everyone in the loop about what they’re supposed to do to help the whole. Make sure that everyone is communicating and has their objectives before their eyes at all times.

Take a bird’s eye view

Being in the loop is good, but it’s not just direction that they need. It’s an environment that allows them to carry on with their workload as much as possible. Taking a bird’s eye view is about getting a good look at how the workflow of the office is. How long does it take to do a certain task? How quickly does work move from one employee to the other? Workflow management can help any employer see where problems are and where shortcuts can be made without cutting quality. The problem with workflow can just as often be systematic as it can be a personal problem of an employee. Efficiency is all about reviewing and updating when you can.

Stop losing things

Another symptom of an inefficient workload is the inability to get resources or information when you need them. In many offices, this can be down to reliance on a cumbersome physical method of storage. If you’re not able to organise your filing system, consider taking it all to a place that’s a lot easier to organise. We’re talking about using your IT network and Cloud software, where it’s a lot easier to tag and find what you need in no time flat. Even smaller businesses that can’t afford top quality IT systems can make use of shared networks. Nowadays, Microsoft Office is incorporating more ways of sharing and organising between groups. There should be no excuse for losing work-important documents nowadays.

Track work interruption

Work isn’t always interrupted by someone losing something they need. There are all kinds of different factors that can take someone ‘out of their zone’. Seemingly urgent ‘questions’, new tasks popping up and the like. Part of solving the problem is helping staff prioritise, as we have mentioned before. For example, everyone can use an official ticketing/request system. If someone has a question or task that needs done, it can be input and set a level of priority. That way, the team member isn’t interrupted by new information and can check it when they need to. Teaching your employees how to set priority properly is important too. If they need something done by so-and-so o’clock, keep it low priority. If their own workflow is at a standstill until something is done, they can make it a top priority.

Get automated

There are a lot of parts of the work process that are important, but they’re not making you money. They’re not a core part of the business. They’re administration tasks. Paper pushing and time wasting. There has to be a better way of dealing with them. Of course, there is; it’s called automation. A lot of the more tedious tasks can easily be automated. Tracking HR factors like absences, paid leave and infractions. Paying bills and sending invoices. Managing your inbox and scheduling meetings. There’s software that can make a lot of managing hands-off. It’s important that you keep an eye on what these automating approaches are doing, but that’s a small price to pay.

Do business from everywhere

For the upper-tier management of any business, their ability to organise and focus the team efforts is important. Absences are never a great thing but if it’s someone with real managing power, it can be even worse. That’s why anyone with that kind of authority should be able to do their job when they’re on the go, too. Make sure you have a mobile fit with the applications that’s going to help you be present even when you’re not. Reading reports, managing emails, keeping in touch. This can all be done from a smartphone. Just make sure you’re also able to delegate some of the other responsibilities amongst the rest of the team.

It’s all about using tech to change the work environment for everyone in the business. From organising their daily tasks to make the overall team much more cohesive. Getting rid of drains on your time and getting more done quicker. We hope the tech mentioned above helps you do that.

Social Media’s Big, Grown Up Future

Social Media’s Big, Grown Up Future

2016 is, allegedly, a breakthrough year for social media. We’ve seen more activity on social media sites than ever before. And now the technology is even influencing the course of democracy itself. Just look at how Donald Trump has used it to his advantage over the last 14 months or so.

Social media has already gone well beyond its original intention. It started as a way for university students to chat to each other on US campuses. It’s telling that we rarely talk about this application anymore. Now everybody’s fired up about its marketing potential and political clout.

What’s more, there’s no reason to believe that progress in the area has hit a brick wall. Far from it: many of today’s social media companies are leaders in innovation. Investors might ask themselves, what does the future hold for the industry?

Virtual Reality

Recently, Money Morning reported that Facebook stocks were up more than 15 percent since January. Commentators argue that the increase isn’t being driven by the company’s old business model. It’s being propelled by new technologies. One of those technologies is VR. Facebook bought the virtual reality company, Oculus back in 2014 for $2 billion. Since then, Mark Zuckerberg has been touting VR as the next big thing in social media. According to analysts, the VR market is set to generate $30 billion by 2020. That’s a lot, considering it was only back in May that we got the first proper VR headset.

No doubt valuations for VR will go higher now that Pokemon Go has arrived. Although Pokemon Go isn’t a VR game, it’s proof that augmented reality is something the masses want. We now have a working model of augmented reality mixed with social. It’s only a matter of time before there’s an application in the social media space.

Decision Making Power From Data

We’ve already seen some examples of social media using its data gathering skills for the common good. Back in 2014, Facebook released its Safety Check feature. The feature was designed to tell loved ones whether they were safe or not during a disaster. Since then, there have been a lot of disasters, and Safety Check has been put to good use. It was first used in the Nepal Earthquake last year. And since then it has been used in all the terrorist atrocities in Europe.

But in the future, data can be used for more than that. Take the recent Zika virus outbreak in Florida. Here is a great example where governments could use Facebook data to help combat disease. If users have location turned on, outbreaks can be tracked geographically. And that information could be used to track down the source.

Companies are going to benefit from data too. They’re going to be able to make decisions on how to market. If companies are able to collect data on what’s trending right now, they can customize their marketing accordingly.

Social Media: The New Skype

It seems strange that we have separate apps for posting pictures and having conversations. We use social media for the former and video chat apps, like Skype, for the latter. But why is that? It’s mainly down to the fact that Skype managed to get into the video-chat space first, and social media hasn’t caught up. Well, until now that is.

In 2016, live video went mainstream. Blab, Periscope, and Meerkat all went big and hit the primetime. Even Google moved to give Hangouts a video function. And this all makes sense. Video calling is fundamentally a social act. And so it should be merged with social media.

Facebook, of course, is on the case. As the world’s biggest social media site, it should be. Facebook wants to make sure that live video streaming is something that everybody does. They don’t want it to be the preserve of businesses and video marketers. They want to take on the likes of Periscope and make live streaming bigger than it already is.

Plus, you can see the appeal of live streaming. One of the limitations of the original Facebook model was that you couldn’t broadcast your life in real time. But with the success of shows like Big Brother, there certainly is a market for it. Marketers on YouNow have discovered that social media users will actually pay to watch live streams. They’ll watch anything, from people sleeping, dancing and singing.

Social At Work

We all know how social media has found its way into our offices. But it’s never been seen as a part of work. It’s something that most employers discourage. And it’s something bloggers constantly tell us is a waste of time.

But now there’s change afoot. No, your favorite social media sites aren’t going to be unblocked by the company firewall. But you may get some new, work-related social apps. One app, called Slack, is doing the rounds right now. It’s an app that allows users to share information, gifs, and PDFs. Facebook has also tried to get into the space. It’s launched its new Facebook for Work, which sounds utterly boring. But it’s designed to separate the business from the social since social media is now such an important part of business.

Machine Learning

Silicon Valley is obsessed with machine learning at the moment. It’s become the new Big Data. (In fact, it uses Big Data). And it’s being put to use on social media. Forevery, for instance, has developed a new technology that automatically classifies your camera roll. All you do is download the app, and then it will organize photos according to the people in the images, where they were taken, etc. It’s an example of just how much easier tech will make our lives.

Facebook too will move to tag you and your friends automatically in photos. We’ve had face recognition technology for a while now. But we’re moving into a different era. Now machine learning is so good it can tell who you are without even looking at your face. It can recognize you from other characteristics.

The all new Samsung Galaxy J3 comes along with a NFC tag which one could stick on their bike / motorcycle / 2 Wheeler’s tank or on the helmet itself. The device notifies you when you have an urgent incoming call, you will be notified about the same.
When you have activated the S bike mode on your phone, a pre-recorded message informs the caller that you are riding the bike currently and cannot pick the call. The caller will be asked to press 1 if it is urgent and wants to really speak to the rider – the device then notifies about the urgent incoming call.

Samsung has put lot of thought while building this functionality. The S Bike mode feature makes sure that you ride safe and allows you to pick the call only when the bike is stationary. The Motion Lock feature takes care of this. Whenever there is an urgent call and you decide to pick the call, the Motion Lock feature makes sure that you take the call only when your bike is completely stopped.
