Social Media’s Big, Grown Up Future

Social Media’s Big, Grown Up Future

2016 is, allegedly, a breakthrough year for social media. We’ve seen more activity on social media sites than ever before. And now the technology is even influencing the course of democracy itself. Just look at how Donald Trump has used it to his advantage over the last 14 months or so.

Social media has already gone well beyond its original intention. It started as a way for university students to chat to each other on US campuses. It’s telling that we rarely talk about this application anymore. Now everybody’s fired up about its marketing potential and political clout.

What’s more, there’s no reason to believe that progress in the area has hit a brick wall. Far from it: many of today’s social media companies are leaders in innovation. Investors might ask themselves, what does the future hold for the industry?

Virtual Reality

Recently, Money Morning reported that Facebook stocks were up more than 15 percent since January. Commentators argue that the increase isn’t being driven by the company’s old business model. It’s being propelled by new technologies. One of those technologies is VR. Facebook bought the virtual reality company, Oculus back in 2014 for $2 billion. Since then, Mark Zuckerberg has been touting VR as the next big thing in social media. According to analysts, the VR market is set to generate $30 billion by 2020. That’s a lot, considering it was only back in May that we got the first proper VR headset.

SocialMedia_1

No doubt valuations for VR will go higher now that Pokemon Go has arrived. Although Pokemon Go isn’t a VR game, it’s proof that augmented reality is something the masses want. We now have a working model of augmented reality mixed with social. It’s only a matter of time before there’s an application in the social media space.

Decision Making Power From Data

We’ve already seen some examples of social media using its data gathering skills for the common good. Back in 2014, Facebook released its Safety Check feature. The feature was designed to tell loved ones whether they were safe or not during a disaster. Since then, there have been a lot of disasters, and Safety Check has been put to good use. It was first used in the Nepal Earthquake last year. And since then it has been used in all the terrorist atrocities in Europe.

But in the future, data can be used for more than that. Take the recent Zika virus outbreak in Florida. Here is a great example where governments could use Facebook data to help combat disease. If users have location turned on, outbreaks can be tracked geographically. And that information could be used to track down the source.

Companies are going to benefit from data too. They’re going to be able to make decisions on how to market. If companies are able to collect data on what’s trending right now, they can customize their marketing accordingly.

Social Media: The New Skype

It seems strange that we have separate apps for posting pictures and having conversations. We use social media for the former and video chat apps, like Skype, for the latter. But why is that? It’s mainly down to the fact that Skype managed to get into the video-chat space first, and social media hasn’t caught up. Well, until now that is.

In 2016, live video went mainstream. Blab, Periscope, and Meerkat all went big and hit the primetime. Even Google moved to give Hangouts a video function. And this all makes sense. Video calling is fundamentally a social act. And so it should be merged with social media.

Facebook, of course, is on the case. As the world’s biggest social media site, it should be. Facebook wants to make sure that live video streaming is something that everybody does. They don’t want it to be the preserve of businesses and video marketers. They want to take on the likes of Periscope and make live streaming bigger than it already is.

SocialMedia_3

Commons.wikimedia.org

Plus, you can see the appeal of live streaming. One of the limitations of the original Facebook model was that you couldn’t broadcast your life in real time. But with the success of shows like Big Brother, there certainly is a market for it. Marketers on YouNow have discovered that social media users will actually pay to watch live streams. They’ll watch anything, from people sleeping, dancing and singing.

Social At Work

We all know how social media has found its way into our offices. But it’s never been seen as a part of work. It’s something that most employers discourage. And it’s something bloggers constantly tell us is a waste of time.

SocialMedia_4

en.wikipedia.org

But now there’s change afoot. No, your favorite social media sites aren’t going to be unblocked by the company firewall. But you may get some new, work-related social apps. One app, called Slack, is doing the rounds right now. It’s an app that allows users to share information, gifs, and PDFs. Facebook has also tried to get into the space. It’s launched its new Facebook for Work, which sounds utterly boring. But it’s designed to separate the business from the social since social media is now such an important part of business.

Machine Learning

Silicon Valley is obsessed with machine learning at the moment. It’s become the new Big Data. (In fact, it uses Big Data). And it’s being put to use on social media. Forevery, for instance, has developed a new technology that automatically classifies your camera roll. All you do is download the app, and then it will organize photos according to the people in the images, where they were taken, etc. It’s an example of just how much easier tech will make our lives.

Facebook too will move to tag you and your friends automatically in photos. We’ve had face recognition technology for a while now. But we’re moving into a different era. Now machine learning is so good it can tell who you are without even looking at your face. It can recognize you from other characteristics.

Disabling Facebook’s Auto Photo Enhance Feature

Disabling Facebook’s Auto Photo Enhance Feature

Now, c. Essentially it uses the same picture improvement filters that were already in the app, but now they’re automatically applied for you, based on what Facebook thinks makes a decent photograph.

The auto photo enhance feature is enabled by default and if you trust in your own photography skills you can disable the auto enhance feature by following some simple steps.

Step 1: To start, open the Facebook app from your iOS device.

Step 2: Select the “More” tab from the lower right corner of the app.

Step 3: Scroll down to the Settings section and select “Settings”, then tap on the “Videos and Photos” option.

Step 4: Now you can see the “Enhance automatically” option. By default the option will be enabled, so go ahead and tap it once to disable it.

a

Now Facebook will not be automatically enforcing brightness and contrast enhancements on the photos that you upload. Anyway, the auto enhance magic wand icon will still appear in the corner of your pictures should you want to enable it on a photo-by-photo basis.

You can easily again enable the auto enhance feature by default by simply following the above mentioned steps. Tapping again on the button “Enhance automatically” will enable it.

Hope you understand what we meant. For more detailed clarification about the same don’t mind making your queries in the comment section. Have a pretty good day..!! 🙂

Facebook’s New Hover Cards

If you logged on to Facebook today and hovered your cursor over a Facebook page or user’s name you may of seen the new Facebook hover card. A hover card is a small popup window that appears with information about a user which includes: there name (page or user), there cover photo, friends that like the page or friends in common, their occupation, and some instances an overview of the user.
Below is an image of what my hover card looks like when I view my own.

The new hover card also has two button, one to see the status of your friendship (or add as friend) as well as a button to message the

user (depending on their privacy settings). If i didn’t know better it seems that Facebook is making a business type card for users for everyone to see, as well as making it easier to socialize with people on Facebook.
Back in 2010 Facebook had a feature like this that pop ups to show information about a user’s interests and being able to delete and add as a friend making it simplified so you don’t have to make a million clicks to add a person or message them.
This feature will enable users to save a lot of time from having too have clicked all over the place. In my own opinion this article will bring great meaning to Facebook and its users, epically considering recently Facebook has been adding several new features and changes for a couple of weeks, and what more is to come? What do you think of this new feature i consider awesome?

Facebook Subscribe button

Facebook adds Subscribe button. Subscribe to anyone and get updates!

Facebook recently introduced a new Subscribe button on their social network. Just a week ago Facebook had introduced new privacy features and now it is in full swing in making new additions to their interface.

This Subscribe button that Facebook has launched recently behaves very similar to Twitter’s Follow button. At least that’s what folks at CNET have to say.

How it Works:

Facebook Subscribers tab

When you Follow a user on Twitter you will see all his latest tweets in your timeline. Same is the concept with Facebook’s Subscribe button. By subscribing to someone on Facebook you will immediately start seeing his updates in your News Feed. Of course you can also choose if you only want to see his important updates and not all of them.

What’s the perk?

The one unique feature which i found in this button is that you can also Subscribe to the updates of a person who is not your friend. It also works vice versa. If you want you can also share your updates to others by turning on the Allow Subscribers feature on their Subscriptions page. Ain’t it neat?

So tell us if you enjoyed this feature by dropping in a comment. How many people have you subscribed to yet?

Facebook has recently rolled out new changes to its interface in 2011. These 3 new changes consists of Better Privacy control when sharing posts, Remove unwanted tags of you, Change the visibility of your post after it has been published.

These changes hit to me just today, perhaps Facebook is going alphabetically in releasing its new changes. So lets get down and review these changes one by one. In addition you can also add location to your posts and tag people who you were with then.

FIRST CHANGE: Post status updates to a specific group of people.

While posting a status on Facebook, you now have the option to choose whom you want it to see. Just press the small gears icon in the lower right corner of the status box. While posting an update, choose from Public (Everybody), Friends (Your Friends only), Custom (Specific People only). Now your status message is seen only by the people who are eligible to see it.

After you click it you will be taken to the Wall tab where a sub-tab called Pending Posts will appear which will help you Approve or Disapprove the Photo tags. Easy isn’t it?

Many a times we think whether to make this status Public or Private and later go with Public anyway. Facebook turning Zuckerbergian

Facebook is a popular social networking site which allows men and women of all age and race to interact and socialise with each other. Facebook was created by a Harvard graduate who goes by the name ‘Mark Zuckerberg’. He got popular from his award winning movie ‘the social network’.

facebook-turning-zuckerbegian

The alarming news is that Facebook users who got inspired by him are now turning onto his footsteps, mostly the dirty footsteps. Reports from Chicago Tribune states that a 17-year-old former student from Oak Park-River Forest (ORPF) high school had allegedly posted a 4-page list ranking 50 girls on their physical appearance on the popular site FACEBOOK.

Chicago Sun-Times said that the student has been identified and immediately expelled from the school and will no longer be permitted to enter the premises. As shown in the movie ‘the social network’ the student devised the same idea and started rating the girls on their looks and sexual behaviour. The student gave a 5-point-rating on their private body parts. There was also an indication of whether their “stock” has gone up or down. The term used was derogatory. According to the newspaper, the girls were also given obnoxious nicknames such as ‘New Queen’, ‘The Designated Drunk’ and ‘The Amazing Bisexual’. The boy did not stop and continued to distribute fliers too.

Fortunately, he was captured on a cell phone video where he was addressing a crowd at the student center shouting “Women are the future, unless we stop them now”. CNET has given a comedic statement about this boy saying what future will hold for this student, will he become the titan of tech or atleast a programmer! Hahaha, that sure gave me a laugh.
