Norton Mobile Security for Android

Norton Mobile Security for Android: Reliable Protection Guaranteed!

Hi friends. Today i am going to review Norton Mobile Security for Android devices. This is a full guide and feature-list to Norton Mobile Security for Android. I am going to discuss all its protection mechanisms and how it makes viruses a thing of the past.

Norton Mobile Security for Android reviewed

Being a open source fan myself i prefer Android over any other Mobile Operating system, simply because its so easy to work with and its functionality is always extendable. Keeping your Android device safe and secure is entirely upto you, its decided on how well you authorize data transfers on the web with your Android phone. With the availability of third party apps, malicious users can easily gain control over our phone. This is where Norton Mobile Security comes in to save you.

So recently i got the chance to try out the paid product and here’s what i came to know:

INSTALLATION:

The setup is very simple or what we call as a 2-minute install. Just visit this link from your Android phone and download the Norton Mobile Security for Android software. You will get a .apk file, just install it and you are good to go.

At its first start it will ask you for your activation code. You should enter the secret code that you got when you purchased the product. Norton will then connect to its licensing server to check if the code is valid and enable your subscription period momentarily.

FEATURE STUDY:

As soon as you’re in, you will get a host of options to choose from such as Setting up Anti-Theft, Anti Malware, Call and SMS Blocking, Web Protection etc. So lets discuss them one by one.

Norton Mobile Security Android - Features

Anti-Theft: This is an advanced feature which remotely locks your lost or stolen device via a SMS and prevents strangers from seeing your private information. You can wipe your sensitive data remotely with the help of your friend’s mobile. Just send the password in the form of a text message to your phone and all your data gets erased to protect your identity.

Norton Mobile Security Android - Anti Theft

To help locate your device, Norton Mobile Security also sends the exact GPS coordinates of your phone’s whereabouts, offering an increased chance of retrieving it. I found this feature to be very helpful since very few software companies these days actually safeguard your phone even when its lost.

Anti Malware: This feature regularly checks your Android system for viruses and other malware that might have gained access. You can also schedule your scans to run at specified intervals. This utility also gives you an option to scan your memory card which slows down your system for a while but that’s a choice i am willing to take.

Norton Mobile Security Android - Anti Malware

Call and SMS Blocking: You can block unwanted numbers and text messages with this feature. Also you can create your own Block List to prevent those numbers from communicating with your device in the future. This is a great utility as you can permanently get rid of a certain someone who annoys you all the time.

Norton Mobile Security Android - Block calls

Web Protection: Surfing websites has never been easy. Hackers can easily gain advantage to your phone and use it for fraudulent purposes if you are careless. Norton Mobile Security’s brings you a web protection that constantly protects you from phishing and malware sites. It works with the Android browser and scans your clicks as you visit them.

Norton Mobile Security Android - Web Protection

Automatic Update: Norton Mobile Security’s LiveUpdate installs and updates your databases automatically. You can also schedule your updates to be a performed when you find it convenient. My update ran for under a minute and all the catalog files were updated successfully. LiveUpdate also respects what you are doing and disables the update feature when you are roaming.

Norton Mobile Security Android - Live Update

PRICING AND AVAILABILITY:

Norton Mobile Security is available for purchase at leading retailers and telcos across the country at Rs 599 for a single license. The price includes a one-year service subscription to use the product and receive Symantec’s protection updates.

If you want to check out the free version before purchasing the fully paid product check out Norton Mobile Security Lite (NMS Lite) available for Free Download at the Android Market.

VERDICT:

I would like to give this product a 4 1/2 star out of 5 stars. When i was working with the Auto Scan enabled i hardly experienced any lag, all the applications ran as smoothly as possible. The only con i found in this product is its memory consumption. My Android phone has 280 MB of RAM installed and Norton was consuming 1.03% of it. But i think that’s a very small price to pay considering of all the pros this product carries especially the NMS tracker technology.

I give a GO to this product and recommend it to all the Android users as security is always important whether it is a PC or a Smartphone, prevention always has the upper hand.

Time Travel in Games now! Girl discovers exploit in mobile games

A 10 year old girl from California whose is called as CyFi in the hacker world has discovered an exploit in Android and iOS games. This exploit allows users to time travel in games.

Girl discovers exploit in mobile games

According to CyFi, we can now fast forward the game progress by advancing the clock. The logic is simple, disconnect the device from WiFi and advance the clock by small increments then reconnect it to WiFi. The result is you are now ahead of time and you are pretty much enjoying it!

She was out sitting playing a Farmville game and apparently got frustrated because the game wasn’t moving fast enough. The game is designed such that a particular crop takes more or less 10 hours to mature. CyFi discovered that if we can advance the clock somehow we can jump into the time sequence and skip the previous chapters.

CyFi told CNET,

“It was hard to make progress in the game, because it took so long for things to grow. So I thought, ‘Why don’t I just change the time?'”

She calls this creation as “Zero Day”. Mobile developers and Testers failed to discover this flaw in games with which we can easily cheat a game. CyFi has done a great job by discovering this vulnerability, she is denying to reveal further details of the flaw as she wants to give the game developers time to fix it. Don’t take this kid lightly she is the co-founder of DEFCON KIDS which is a small part of DEFCON ( The World’s largest underground hacking conference).

Good news for Nokia 5230 users. Nokia has rolled out a new software update which comes with some amazing add-ons like “Swipe to Unlock” , Internet Radio, an awesome web browser , Kinetic scrolling, improved camera performance and more..

Swipe to Unlock

People who upgraded their phone to the newest firmware 50.0.0.1 are pretty much excited about the “Swipe to Unlock” feature where the user is just required to swipe around the screen to unlock phone. The “Swipe” feature in Nokia has been heard in recent announcement of Nokia N9- The buttonless phone.

A good surprise for those who upgraded to latest nokia firmware 50.0.0.1.

An Awesome Browser

(with minimal HTML5 support)

You cannot believe if this is your default Nokia browser. The Upgrade comes with NokiaBrowser/7.3.1.25 with a major UI update, easier navigation, html5 support and more. I rate this browser the best among all the other previous releases. New color schemes, simple, opening multiple windows is a big plus!

Internet Radio

(Optional)

An Optional update for this firmware. Though the Internet Radio requires some extra space, it is an awesome thing one could ever imagine. The radio stations can be played so swiftly on handset, blends it very natively to your phone. Internet Radio is equipped over thousand internet radio stations across world. Plays with a good quality sound, works well even on basic GPRS connection..

Facebook and Ovi Maps optional upgrade are also available with this firmware.

Note:

The Update to 50.0.0.1 cannot be made OTA(Over the air), one has to upgrade using ‘Nokia Software Updater’ from PC..

Dial *#0000# on your handset and click on “check for updates” to start with.

Expected Question: How to Use Swipe to Unlock feature in Nokia 5230 (latest firmware 50.0.0.1)

Answer: When the phone is locked, click on the “Menu” hard key and then a big digital clock with a swipe option pops up.. swipe on it to unlock the phone.

Easy, Interesting and Exciting. Isn’t it? Nokia is getting better and better. What say?

Flash Vs HTML5

Google Swiffy Introduced: Flash “out” HTML5 “in”

With the introduction of Google+, Google also introduced its new Flash to HTML5 converter on Tuesday. This creation is the work of a very young, energetic and passionate Googler known as Pieter Senster.

Google Swiffy Labs

According to this software, it can convert Flash animation files known as .SWF into fully functional HTML5 files. As we know Flash is very important to us. All the videos we watch on YouTube and other internet players are Flash related content, so with the introduction of this technology people can now watch videos without installing the Flash plugin, like iPhones and iPads which do not support Flash.

convert-flash-to-html5

Speaking in Technobabble, simply feed the Swiffy converter with a .swf file and the result is a JSON file rendered with the help of SVG and a bit of HTML5 and CSS3. Modern browsers like Google Chrome and Apple Safari reads the converted files as Javascript and renders the content smoothly to you. Take a look at some of the demo content here at Swiffy Galleria.

Maybe you would have also heard a similar Flash to HTML5 converting tool developed by Adobe and only known as Wallaby. But Google claims that Swiffy has lot more advantages than Wallaby. Some of the primary being Swiffy can convert .swf files whereas Wallaby only focuses on .fla file conversion. Also Wallaby’s converted file can easily be edited whereas Swiffy’s files are very hard to breakthrough. For a more deeper review refer to FAQ over here.

Don’t forget to visit Swiffy Labs. Time for your comment! You can also submit your creations over here.

Apple goes berserk! iOS5, Mac OSX Lion and iCloud at WWDC

Apple is launching its iOS 5 mobile operating system, MAC OS X Lion desktop operating system and also its iCloud service: Apple’s very own Cloud service to be held at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco, this June 6.

wwdc-2011

According to engadget, the team will be focused on its latest software enhancements and also its release of the newest, MAC OS X Lion operating system. This is gonna be a big day because some folks at Buzzle are already regard this as a clash between Apple and the Android developers since Google already launched its latest Android OS the “Ice Cream Sandwich” just this month. The release will be done by Steve Jobs himself along with other executives.

ios5-2011

The launch of iOS 5 is creating a major buzz for the Apple users. Some customers are already creating a wishlist of what improvements they would like to add in the new release. If you want to know what other people are thinking, browse through this gallery as BusinessInsider brings it to you. Regarding the iOS 5 features, this time it will introduce voice control to type the text automatically and widgets too possibly to compete with the Android, as we have seen Android OS is full of widgets. Of course, there will be integration of NFC chips and Cloud computing (Google wallet and iCloud respectively). GET IT? Other than these there’s a fully redone user interface and addition of an updated camera app (iPhone 4S will have a 8-megapixel camera), thats why!

Mac_OS_X_Lion-2011

Coming to MAC OS X Lion, this is going to be a major concern at the WWDC this time. According to CNET, the poor MAC OSX Snow Leopard was already being hit by a rogue antivirus causing a MAC malware scare so you will possibly see the release of a software update for SL. Moving on, there is a pretty nice featurelist we are going to see in Lion this time, some of them being, introduction of Wi-Fi Direct, wireless iTunes sync capability, Finder,Mail,AirDrop and iCal improvements.

icloud-2011

iCloud service being new one on the line, we have not been able to gather much news about it but our reporters at CNET say that Apple will integrate “music features” with the Cloud support. Already deals have been made with the music giants such as EMI Music, Warner Music and SONY Music.

Here is an official PRESS RELEASE made by Apple.

Now its time for your comment. Tell us what your thoughts are about Apple. Will Apple keep dominating the industry or will Android overtake them soon? Also if you are an attendee at the WWDC 2011 please share with us your latest updates!

Google Wallet’s arrival! What is it?

Officially announced this Thursday, Google wallet has arrived in US bringing brand new changes to online payment systems. With Google wallet you can just wave your mobile on Mastercard paypass terminals and the payment will automatically be made.

google-wallet-official-logo

Yes it is that easy. This facility has been currently introduced only on the Nexus S handsets. Google wallet works only on NFC (Near-Field-Communications) based smartphones. According to engadget, this service also works on non-NFC phones but will require a NFC sticker instead.

How does it work: The working is pretty simple.Your card number and all the transaction information is encrypted and stored on a tamper-proof chip from NXP Semiconductor onto the smartphone. Google is calling this functionality as the “Secure Element”, according to CNET. Customers just need to enter their PIN to open the Google wallet application and carry on their transactions.

google-wallet-faster-payments

What If? Yes exactly, i was too wondering about that. Fortunately there are no What If’s!!! Google has assured us that if there be a chance that your phone is lost your banking credentials will not be compromised and your financial entities will be left intact. A thief should firstly have to bypass your smartphone security and then has to bypass Google Wallet App security. That’s not as easy as it sounds. Bypassing Google Wallet security is no child’s game, if the app senses a wrong password has been entered too many times, the SECURE ELEMENT locks in itself. No transactions can be carried out in this state and can only be revived by resetting it. Successful reset can be performed only when a secret combination is entered provided by the issuing bank, the Trusted Service Manager and the user. Same is the procedure if you forget your PIN.

For other dangerous ideas that slug your mind, you can read an article here to address all your possible vulnerability issues.

google-wallet-what-is-it

Google Wallet is currently only available in US, but slowly it will hit our streets too. Google has described a nice and simple pictorial representation of how Google Wallet works, check it out over here.

Don’t forget to share your comment on this story! We would like to know your opinion of what do you think about the new Google Wallet. Will it prove to be a success and replace Paypal and all other online payment services or will you review your options and then decide?

Nokia N9 on its way!

Nokia N9 or as Nokia is calling it the N950 is supposedly releasing this summer. Nokia N9 is a smartphone and was rumored to be the first MeeGo powered device to hit the streets. But instead Nokia went on pursuing its Windows Phone 7 craze.

nokia-n9-qwerty-keypad

Recently a teaser video was floating around the web, posted first at pocketnow.com glimpsing the design of Nokia N9, but now we are unable to watch the video because of a copyright claim by the Nokia Corporation. Nokia possibly found the leak and patched it up. Nokia N9 is reported to run on a MeeGo 1.2 GHz processor housing 768MB of RAM memory. Internal memory will be of 64GB although can be increased with the help of a microSD card which can expand upto a maximum of 32GB. It will also feature a 12 megapixel Carl Zeiss optical camera and can capture videos at 720p. Nokia is believed to have a sliding QWERTY keyboard with a 4.2 AMOLED display. The display is a scratch resistant surface.

Nokia-N9-blazingfast

Other eye-catching features include Proximity sensor for automatically turning off the phone and an accelerometer sensor as well as handwriting recognition feature. Sources at techtree are claiming that Nokia N9 could be released as soon as in the next month. But those are only rumors, we dont know if Nokia will surely be releasing its smartphone any sooner. Although quite a few blogs suggests otherwise. For screenshots  of the new Nokia N9 please click here.

Here is the same teaser video of the Nokia N9. Watch it before it too gets taken down by Nokia Corp. The background song that is playing in the video is Jessie’s girl. For the lyrics and its original music video please click here.
