The very first thing which I noticed as soon as I held the phone on my hand is the weight.  The device weighs 200 grams, Initially I felt it was bit heavy, gradually i got used to it.  There is a power saving application which is built-in to the phone, It helps  extend the phone’s battery life by turning off the battery-intensive processes like Wi-fi and Bluetooth, also by dimming the screen. A dedicated switch is present at the right side of phone called as “Power-saving switch”, with a toggle you can save the phone’s battery consumption. • 5” Smartphone
  • Dual SIM (GSM and WCDMA)
  • 5 Mega Pixel camera with built in flash.

PhilipsW3500

The Philips w3500 is a large phone with 5 inch WFVGA display running on 1.3Ghz processor.  I found the phone fits perfectly into your pocket also the build quality is fairly good.  This Philips phone runs on 4.2.2 version of Android OS  (Jellybean) . Quickly you can notice the large screen with Philips logo.  The Phone comes with 2 slots for SIM card and 1 slot for memory card ( up to 32 GB).

Initial set up

Setting up the phone was easy.  After configuring the WiFi, you just have to fill in your existing google account details.  All Google stuff like Contacts, Calendars and others gets synced on your phone. It was easy to remove the covers and insert the SIM card (Good for mini SIM card, not so good for micro SIM card)

Apps and Games

The Phone comes pre-installed with Google Play Store where you can find millions of android apps.  Zomato, WhatsApp,BookMyShow, JustUnfollow are some of the apps which I downloaded from store. As the phone is equipped with 1 GB RAM Games like Subway Surfers performed better on this phone with minimum load time and fast graphics rendering.

Battery

No problems yet,  The phone is running normally since its first charge.  You can charge the phone using the provided data cable attached with Charger. The battery is of 2200 mAh (Li-ion).

Camera

The Philips W3500 has a 5 Mega Pixel Camera with built in flash. While trying the phone hands on, I was able to take some good pictures. Big screen is a good add-on to browse though your taken pictures.  The camera performed well in sunlight and low light conditions as well. One interesting thing which I observed is the thumbnails for videos were cool with good animations, so it is easy to distinguish between a photo and a video. The Phone is also equipped with front facing camera – good for taking selfies.

Google Smart Contact Lenses Explained

[ad#ad-2-1]
Google is developing a smart contact lens, with pharmaceutical giant Novartis, to help patients manage diabetes. Under a new development and licensing deal between Google and the Alcon eyewear division at Novartis, the two companies said they will create a smart contact lens that contains a low power microchip and an almost invisible, hair-thin electronic circuit. The lens can measure diabetics’ blood sugar levels directly from tear fluid on the surface of the eyeball. The system sends data to a mobile device to keep the individual informed.

google_contact_lens

Google co-founder Sergey Brin said the company wanted to use “the latest technology in ‘minituarisation’ of electronics” in order to improve people’s “quality of life”. The combination of Google’s technology background and Novartis’ pharmaceutical knowledge would help meet “unmet medical needs”, Jimenez claimed. The Google team involved in the contact lens development is called Google[x], and it focuses on “finding new solutions to big global problems” in healthcare and beyond, according to the companies.

The secretive Google[x] facility operates in Mountain View, California, and one of its most high profile projects has been a self driving car. It is also working closely on speech recognition, balloon powered internet access for rural areas, wind power, and technology for the Internet of Things – in which internet connected home, personal and city objects communicate with each other and take automatic action when different events take place.

SITA gets Smartwatch with Boarding Passes

[ad#ad-2-1]

Airlines can now offer their ultra tech-savvy passengers the chance to board their flight with a mere flick of their wrist and scan of their smartwatch. SITA Lab continues to innovate and lead in the area of wearable tech by providing boarding passes for Android watches via its API available now on developer.aero.

smartbp_1

A simple alert via Android Wear technology will remind the passenger of their flight at the appropriate time and location. A quick swipe reveals the boarding pass and a second swipe displays the barcode allowing the passenger to get through the airport checkpoints and board the plane.

Jim Peters, CTO, SITA, said: “We have done considerable research into the use of wearable technology for the air transport industry and this is the first step to enable passengers to use their own wearable devices as they make their way through the airport.

“SITA’s boarding pass is fully compliant with international regulations, including the TSA, so can be used at airports across the world. We’ve made this available through our industry API platform so it will be interesting to see which airlines will be the early adopters.

SITA provides a selection of APIs for airlines and airports on its developer.aero platform including ones for beacons, baggage tracking and iTravel. Because the boarding passes are delivered via API a simple mark up in the code, which takes less than two minutes, enables Google Now operation and allows smartwatches to be a useful travel tool.

SITA’s boarding pass API is already in use at major airlines including JetBlue and Virgin Atlantic.
