Apple had revolutionized the tablet market by the launch of its iPad.
Here’s a short history of the original iPad:
Competitors began to appear immediately – the HP slate ! But the iPad was way ahead of the slate. The iPad was the best in the class till Android tablets like the Motorola Xoom and the Samsung Galaxy Tab hit the market !
And now, the next generation:
Product launches by Apple are the best in the entire industry. That leaves no doubt on why there are books such as The Presentation Secrets of Steve Jobs. The launch of the iPad2 was no different. You can watch the full launch video on youtube.
During product launch, it was shown why 2010 was the year of the iPad. After showing the amazing wonders done by the iPad Steve Jobs asked a question: “What will 2011 be ? The year of the copycats ?”
Steve Jobs was really referring to Android tablets as the copycats. But he quite confidently stated that his competitors(Android, RIM, etc.) were not even close to the first tablet. He proved his point by stating: “If you don’t think that $499 is a competitive price then ask our competitors ! They’ll tell you…”
Its true that the iPad was a little cheap for the original quality. The only tablet close to it(the Motorola Xoom) was priced at $799.
Jobs continued: “We wont allow 2011 to be the year of the copycats. So we decided to improve the iPad”
This was the time he unveiled the slimmer iPad2. This was so slim, that it aroused comments from Samsung: “Apple made it too thin. We’ll have to redesign the Galaxy Tab 10.1 before launch” !
However the most striking feature of the iPad2 wasn’t the device itself, but rather an accessory ! Apple unveiled the new iPad2 cover. This is the best cover design I’ve ever seen in my life ! Magnetic edges line the cover into place very easily, and the best part is that the screen gets cleaned when you put the cover. This cover turns off the iPad2 when its put on and turns it back on when its removed ! A very handy accessory that made the iPad2 stand out from the other tablets.
But thats not all. The main reason Apple can sell this device for such a low price is because it runs on the processing chip made by Apple. The A4 chip ran in the iPad smoothly. However, Apple managed to improve that as well. The new A5 chip that powers the iPad2 is twice as fast in processing and 9 times faster graphics performance making it ideal for heavy workloads and gaming. Yet with all this performance boost, it still retained the same 10 hours battery life.
Apart from these, the other new features were webcam support, a high end back camera, airplay, video mirroring, gyroscope, accelerometer, compass and a deadly competition…..
Competition ? The price !!
With much better hardware(and competitors selling junk for more cost) you would expect that the new iPad would be sold at a high price. This was not so. The new iPad2 was being sold at the same price as the original iPad – $499.
The price factor was deadly. Android fans had their heads down when they saw a much better tablet come up at a lower price. If you don’t believe me then Google for how this shattered the plans of millions of tablets, and made Samsung rethink its galaxy tab 10.1 pricing model. The much awaited Blackberry Playbook seemed almost useless now !

Steve Jobs rightly said: “I don’t think that 2011 is going to be the year of the copycats. I think that 2011 is going to be the year of the iPad2 !”
If you thought that the original iPad was worth buying, then this is the device for you !
